The Benyounes Quartet with Philip Higham - cello

This concert was given in memory of the Rt Rev. Clive Young, former Bishop of Dunwich and a patron of this concert series, who died in October 2015.


  • Bach. Cello Suite No 6 in D major. (All six suites recently recorded on the Delphian label with WCC supporting No 6.)
  • Haydn. String Quartet in F major Op.77 No 2
  • Schubert. String Quintet in C major D.956

Benyounes Quartet*
"The polish of the Benyounes Quartet...with tight ensemble and confident projection.(The Times). Formed at the Royal Northern  College of Music, they won the Sandor Vegh String Quartet Competition in Budapest in 2012. They have performed at the Wigmore Hall, Vienna Konzerthaus and the Aldeburgh Britten Centenary Weekend.

* Jonathan Byers replaces Kim Vaughan the cellist of the Benyounes Quartet, who is expecting a baby in June. Jonny was formerly the cellist of the Badke Quartet

Philip Higham
A major talent…Philip Higham offered object lessons in lyrical sensitivity, musical architecture and expressive insight."(Washington Post) A great friend of this concert series, he received high praise from The Gramophone magazine and a five star review by the BBC Music Magazine for his recording of Britten Cello Suites. His recording  of Bach's Cello Suites has recently been released by Delphian. WCC provided finacial support for recording of the Sixth Suite, to be performed in this concert.

The Ruisi Quartet performed the Haydn and Ravel quartets.
The Alke joined them in a performance of the Mendelssohn Octet.

Ruisi Quartet
Winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society's prize for Young British String Players and finalists in the YCAT competition in 2015, performances have included  King's Place and the Wigmore Hall. They have studied with Levon Chilingirian and Ferenc Rados in masterclasses at Prussia Cove.

Alke Quartet
Finalists in the Bloch Music Competition they have been chosen as Park Lane Group Artists for 2016
They are also 'Quartet in Residence' at the Royal College of Music 2016
