Royal College of Music Strings*. Directed by Sean Riley

  • Vaughan Williams. Five Variants Of Dives and Lazarus*'. (augmented by the advanced string players of Farlingaye High School and Woodbridge School.)
  • Mozart. Divertimento in D major K 136.
  • Bach. Double Violin Concerto in D minor.
  • Grieg. Holberg Suite.
  • Elgar. Serenade For Strings in E minor.
  • Bartok. Romanian Dances.

In the Five Variants, Vaughan Williams explores five different versions of this beautiful folk song which made such a profound impression on him. It was performed at his memorial service in Westminster Abbey in 1958. The concert continues with some of the most iconic works for string ensemble and ends, as it began, with another great European composer’s tribute to his national folk music. *This is the third educational project organised by WCC involving the town’s two secondary schools.

The American violinist Sean Riley is an alumnus of both the Julliard and Aspen Schools of Music. He has studied with Kyung Wha Chung and worked with Bernard Haitink, James Levine and Pierre Boulez. Awarded an MA in performance, he is currently studying for a doctorate at the Royal College Of Music.
